Cheslatta Carrier Nation’s Aboriginal Strong Start Program
The Cheslatta Carrier Nation Strong Start Program is led by Cheslatta staffers Chantal Reid (Coordinator) and Michelle Burt (Aboriginal Early Childhood Education) and was initiated in October of 2020. The program is partially funded by the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) and includes six components: language, culture, education, health, social support, and family involvement.
The Strong Start program is aimed at engaging with children 0-6 years old and is provided to support on-reserve members with gradual expansion to include members who live in Burns Lake. Much of the program so far has involved assembling Education, Craft and Healthy Snacks kits for delivery to members.
The Strong Start Program has dedicated space in the Cheslatta Training Center in Southside and is hoping to receive a $100,000 grant this year from FNHA to build an outdoor play area. When COVID-19 orders allow, the space will be used for mothers and their children to come for support and activities. There will be circle time curriculum, songs, stories, dance, arts and crafts, and seasonal activities.
