ELECTION DAY is Thursday, May 29, 2025. Any elector may vote in person, by mail, or online.

  • A poll will be open from 9am to 8pm on Thursday, May 29, 2025(all local times) at 1215 Keefes Landing Road in Southbank, British Columbia.

  • A Remote Voting Package is being mailed to each elector living off-reserve with a current mailing address on record with the CCN administration. Eligible voters (electors) are responsible for ensuring their address is up to date with the Nation; any other elector may also request a Remote Voter Package from the Electoral Officer up to 14 days before the election.

April 24, 2025 Update

Notice of Election: Cheslatta Carrier Nation

Notice is hereby given to the electors of the Cheslatta Carrier Nation (CCN) that a vote will be held to elect one (1) Chief and two (2) Councillors for a four-year term.

ELECTION DAY is Thursday, May 29, 2025. A poll will be open from 9am to 8pm (all local times) at 1215 Keefes Landing Road in Southbank, British Columbia. Any elector may vote in person, online, or by mail.

  • There are five (5) approved Chief Candidates for one (1) Chief position: Trenis Cahoose, Christon Charlie, Jennifer Joseph (Jack), Ron Vanzetta, and Janet M. Whitford.

  • There are three (3) approved Councillor Candidates for two (2) Councillor positions: Brooke Burt, Hazel Burt, and Teddy Jack.

  • All members of the Cheslatta Carrier Nation who are 18 years or older on May 29, 2025 and whose name appears or should appear on the Voter List are eligible to vote in this election.

  • A Remote Voting Package is being mailed to each elector living off-reserve with a current mailing address on record with the CCN administration. Eligible voters (electors) are responsible for ensuring their address is up to date with the Nation; any other elector may also request a Remote Voter Package from the Electoral Officer up to 14 days before the election.

  • Online voting is open between 9am on Friday, April 25, 2024 and 8pm on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 and can be accessed during that time through a link at www.cheslatta.com <NOTE: For those planning to vote online, keep in mind that online voting closes the day before Election Day per Part 16.15 of the Cheslatta Carrier Nation Custom Election Code>

  • Paper ballots will be counted after the poll closes at 8pm on Thursday, May 29, 2025 at the above polling location. The results, including online ballots, will be announced as soon as possible afterwards while ensuring accuracy of the count per Part 14 of the CCN Election Code.

April 14, 2025 Update

Candidate Qualification Process Underway

This week is focused on qualifying candidates. Nominees have until end of day Tuesday, April 15, 2025, to accept their nomination, and until Sunday, April 20, 2025, to provide the Electoral Officer with a Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Finance Letter.

The Notice of Election will be prepared once the list of candidates is finalized on Monday, April 21, 2025, and will be posted by Thursday, April 24, 2025, as outlined in the election rules.

March 14, 2025 Update

Cheslatta Carrier Nation Notice of Nomination Meeting for Chief & Councillors

A Nomination meeting of the electors of the Cheslatta Carrier Nation (CCN) will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2025, from 5pm to 8pm (local time).

The Nomination Meeting will take place at the Cheslatta Carrier Nation band office located at 1215 Keefes Landing Road in Southbank, British Columbia. Electors can also join virtually if not able to attend in person.

Electors WHO WOULD LIKE TO JOIN THE MEETING VIRTUALLY:

If you’d like to attend the meeting virtually, please submit your request, including your full name, via email to election2025@cheslatta.com no later than Thursday, April 10th, at 5PM. Instructions to join will be sent prior to the meeting start time on Thursday, April 10th.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ONLINE NOMINATIONS ARE NOT ALLOWED - to nominate during the meeting, you must attend in person. Otherwise, you must submit your Nomination Forms prior to the meeting start (full information in the next section).

The purpose of the meeting is to nominate candidates for one (1) Chief and two (2) Councillors for the next four-year term, commencing on June 1, 2025.

To vote, you must be a registered Cheslatta Carrier Nation member whose name appears on the Voter List and be 18 years or older on May 29, 2025 (the date of the election).

Eligible voters may nominate or second one person for Chief and/or one person for Councillor, either at the Nomination Meeting, or by delivering the completed Mail-In Voter Declaration Form and Mail-In Nomination Form to the Electoral Officer via the following options:

  • Email your completed forms to gd.drewnorth@gmail.com

  • Mail-in your completed forms to #404-999 Canada Place, Vancouver, BC V6C 3E2

  • Hand-deliver your completed forms at the Nomination Meeting

Emailed, Mailed-In, and Hand-Delivered nominations must include the signed and witnessed Voter Declaration Form.

Nomination forms must be received by the Electoral Officer before the start of the nomination meeting on Thursday, April 10, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. to be valid as per section 8.6 of the Cheslatta Carrier Nation Custom Election Code.

To be nominated, you must:

a) Be a Band Member and at least 18 years of age by the nomination meeting.
b) Reside within a 50km radius of the Administrative Offices, or be prepared to and actually move, within 60 days after being elected, to reside within a 50km radius of the Administrative Offices.
c) Not be ineligible pursuant to Sections 3.10 and 19.14 of the CCN Custom Election Code, and not have been convicted of a Criminal Offence in the five years prior to your nomination.
d) Not owe money to the Nation in excess of:

  • $200 for more than 12 months

  • $2,000 for more than 6 months

  • $20,000 (any time)

e) Be nominated in accordance with the procedure set out in this Code.
f) To be eligible for the office of Chief, be prepared to and actually take a leave of absence or resign from any employment to give his or her full-time attention to the position of Chief.
g) To be eligible for the office of Councillor, be prepared to and actually take a leave of absence or resign from any employment except employment by the Band or a Band-owned corporation.
h) If a Band employee, take a leave of absence after accepting a nomination. Such leave of absence shall expire on the day of the Election, and, if not elected, the Band employee shall return to work on the next regular workday.
i) Be responsible for any costs associated with attending Band Council meetings held on the reserve, at the Administrative Offices, or in the Burns Lake area.

Every candidate who is nominated will be required to provide within 10 days:

  • A Criminal Record Check

  • A letter from the Cheslatta Finance Department confirming eligibility to the Electoral Officer.

Election Details

The election will be held at the Cheslatta Carrier Nation band office, located at 1215 Keefes Landing Road, Southbank, British Columbia, on Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 9am to 8pm (local time).

Any elector may vote in person, online, or by mail-in ballot.
