UPDATES: South Ootsa Fires

From Cheslatta Carrier Nation & BC Wildfire Service

September 17th, 2024 | 8AM

Dear Membership,

Please be advised that the evacuation alert for the north shore of the Ootsa Lake has now been lifted by the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako, in collaboration with the BC Wildfire Service.

Recent rainfall has helped with fires burning on the south shore of Ootsa Lake and the fires have not seen any growth in recent days. There are still crews on the ground monitoring the situation.

BC Wildfire Service does not anticipate any fire growth this week based on the upcoming weather forecast. Community members are advised to continue to check for updates and information on the Regional District, Chinook Emergency Response Society, and BC Wildfire websites by visiting the links below.

Sincerely,
Chief Corrina Leween

Yesterday there was over 10 millimetres of rainfall in the area south of Ootsa Lake which has helped with fire suppression efforts and the smoke. There is still fire activity to the south of Ootsa Lake, and the evacuation alerts remain in place for properties along the north shore of Ootsa Lake. Monitoring for spot fires took place over the weekend and will continue over the course of this week along the north shore of Ootsa Lake. There continues to be no immediate threat to any Cheslatta residences.

People are still advised to be mindful about staying indoors as much as possible if you are affected by the smoke and are encouraged to have your air purifiers going. Please keep an eye open for any additional notices that are issued by the Regional District and Cheslatta Carrier Nation.

Increased fire behaviour was observed on the Sabina Lake wildfire yesterday due to sustained winds as well as warm and dry temperatures. The fire has moved to the northeast but is still south of Ootsa Lake and in Tweedsmuir Park. Please be advised that the fire is not in the Southside community, despite the increased amounts of smoke.

Crews are doing work on the north shore of Ootsa Lake to make sure they can respond quickly to any spotting, but at this time the fire remains only south of Ootsa Lake.

As a precaution, an evacuation alert has been put back in place for the area around Chief Louie Arm, however, there are no active fires in the alert area and this alert has only been issued as a precaution. There are still approximately 145 personnel assigned to this fire, as well as nine helicopters supporting operations.

There is no immediate threat to any Cheslatta residences or parcels. People are advised to stay indoors as much as possible and keep an eye open for any additional notices that are issued by the Regional District and Cheslatta Carrier Nation.

Please refer to the attached map which shows where the fire is currently burning. For more information and resources, please visit the sites below.

Sincerely,
