ABOUT CHESLATTA CARRIER NATION
Cheslatta Carrier Nation (CCN) is a First Nations community of 350 members located 25 km south of Burns Lake in BC’s northern interior. CCN’s Core Territory encompasses the Nechako Reservoir and includes portions of Tweedsmuir and Entiako Provincial Parks.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Join Cheslatta Carrier Nation in researching, preserving and managing historical archives, collections, artifacts, and ancestral belongings including digitizing, cataloging and safeguarding documents, photographs, maps, and audiovisual materials while supporting repatriation efforts and cultural education. This role works closely with Elders, leadership, and external organizations to protect and honour Cheslatta’s heritage.
Key Responsibilities
Archive Management: Digitize, catalog, and preserve historical materials and archaeological artifacts, ensuring accessibility and long-term protection.
Cultural Preservation: Implement and maintain and archival policies for handling, storage, and conservation of artifacts, collections, documents, and ancestral belongings.
Archaeology: Oversee and monitor archaeological activities in the territory. Maintain artifact repository.
Repatriation & Research: Pursue repatriation efforts, liaise with external public/private collections and institutions, and conduct and support research on Cheslatta and Southside history, land and heritage.
Community Engagement: Conduct interviews with Elders, organize cultural events, and facilitate knowledge-sharing initiatives. Maintain consistent communications on Cheslatta networks.
Administration & Documentation: Maintain accurate records, update archival systems, and support leadership with historical documentation.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in Archival Studies, Library Science, Museum Studies, History, Indigenous Studies, or related field (Master’s is an asset).
Minimum 3 years of experience working in an archives or library space, or a minimum 3 years of experience working for a First Nations community, or a combination of the two.
Strong understanding of First Nations history, cultural protocols, and governance.
Knowledge of digital archiving, preservation best practices, and archival software.
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and photography software
Strong research, organizational, and documentation skills.
Excellent written/verbal communication and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
High level of confidentiality and sensitivity in handling historical and cultural records.
Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and travel as needed.
Ability to develop and manage budgets and experience in proposal writing and reporting.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a full-time position based at Cheslatta Carrier Nation’s office, located at Southbank, BC. Starting compensation ranges between $55,000 - $70,000. Salary is negotiable based on qualifications and experience. Only those shortlisted will be notified.
